In most things in life there are leaders and there are followers. By leaders, I'm not just talking about leaders of a country or the "big boss". I'm talking about doctors, teachers, pastors, parents ... Now patients and students aren't really "followers" I guess, but they do look up to those in leadership positions.
Here's my rant ... it's such an awesome task to be a leader. I look at "rate your Doctor" online and I hear so many bad things written about doctors. I hear people talk about how bad a teacher is or how someone in leadership could do a better job. I tell you there are some people out there that are doing a pretty crappy job. But you know what else? What an incredible responsibility! I have been in leadership and sometimes I liked it ... a lot. Sometimes I hated it! There is so much accountability and openess to be judged. Because someone is in a public eye they are free range to pass judgement on.
Nothing in particular has set off this little rant ... it's something I've been thinking about for awhile. I tell you, I would not want to be a Dr. Knowing you are making decisions that affect so many lives in such a huge way. Of course, being a Dr was not my calling in life. I think about teachers ... Parents can pass judgement at any time. I remember being a leader of a camp and HATING when I had to call a parent back. It was my responsibility to know what was going on and to answer for myself and everyone else.
Accountability is good .. we should always be striving to do our best, accept constructive critism and be proud of the decisions we make. I guess my heart just reaches out to people who put themselves in a place where they often wear a bull's eye on their chest. I suppose they know what they are getting into when they signed up.
For those who are doing their best to make a difference in other people's lives ... police officers, teachers, medical staff, politcal leaders, principal's, pastors, management teams .... thank you.
We met. We fell in love. We married. We had a baby girl. We had another baby girl. Story short ... this is where we are.

Christmas Holidays with the Dickeys
I can hardly believe that Christmas has come and gone. Seems like just yesterday we were making fun of people for decorating so early (sorry if that's you) and now its over. Maybe there is a reason people start celebrating so early ...
We had a wonderful Christmas. Pretty quiet. Just the four of us. JJ was pretty excited. Tee couldn't have cared less. We finally got her to open a gift and she was pretty excited she removed the paper. No interest in seeing what was inside the box! She did get a little penquin that has become her very best friend. It's kind of fun how it's the little things that got them excited. We didn't have a turkey dinner (that's coming on Friday), but I think JJ was in heaven because we let her have a bunwich and cucumber for both lunch and supper. Whoa! That's so cool! he he. She's so easy to please! It was nice to receive phone calls from family ... then a little Christmas bath and the kids were off to bed again. Doesn't take much to make them happy at this age.
It's kind of nice because it feels like Tee is finally acting like herself again. I guess Christmas can be a bit overwhelming. JJ is curled up watching Full House. When did she get so grown up? Wonder if she'll develop a crush on Uncle Jesse like the rest of us did.... So looking forward to our final celebration on Friday. Then the tree goes down and I begin my search for a recumbent bike. Back in the swing of things. Well, sort of. Haven't really shared too much with people, but things are going to be anything, but "back in the swing". Matthew will not be returning to his job. Tomorrow is his last day. Little scary, but we feel God's peace as we begin a new journey. Matthew's sister has also moved in with us. Our basement has been cleaned up (which is a miracle if you know what it looked like) and she has set up camp down there. What a huge blessing to have someone around to help!! It's been the easiest adjustment and we love having her here.
Well, that was our Christmas. Its been nice having the girls home and I think they've really enjoyed having a break. Tee slept until 11 yesterday! Hope you're enjoying your time off and if you're in our area ... hope you're enjoying all this white stuff!

Merry Christmas from us
Hello everyone!
I know, I know. You're all saying, "what! no Christmas card?" I have gone digital. Partially because it's easier, but mostly because it's one week until Christmas and I am just sitting down now to do this. First of all, we'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
A lot of you have followed me online so there shouldn't be anything overly surprising in this letter. If you're ever wondering, "what are those Dickeys up to?", you can visit our website at www.hopefuljourneyof4. blogspot.com ...
It's been an interesting and rewarding year! I look back over the year and wonder if we are the same family that started out the year 2011. Our birth certificates say we are the same people so here it is ...
Matthew is doing well. He's about to start an exciting journey in the new year. I won't say too much on here, but I'm sure he'll be sharing in the near future. He's still pretty cute, but there is the odd grey hair coming. Not sure which of us Dickey girls has caused it, but we love him all the same!
I'm doing well. Continuing my workouts and trying to stay as active as possible. I've had some discouragment over the year, but with the encouragement of my Dr and family I am as determined as ever. I've really enjoyed helping in JJ's class this year and pretty much enjoy being the Mama bear of this family.
JJ is the big 0-5 and she is awesomesauce. She's grown up a lot over the year. She's learning to read and write and taken a huge interest in geography ... she's her Mommy's girl. She got the intergrity award at her school and we are super duper proud of her. Must remember this on days she is giving us a run for our money!
Tee is doing so well in her new program. She was diagnosed in March with moderate-severe autism, but has only shown her amazing potential since that day. We are starting to hear a few words now and enjoy seeing how her mind works. She's a very smart 3 year old. Every day is a challenge, but she's still our delight.
Anyways, that's the 2011 Dickeys. Only God knows what's instore for 2012, but we trust he has great plans for us.
Love,
Matthew, Lisa, JJ and Tee

Every shade of pink
K guys, I am not a poet so please be gracious.
To my little girls
Each flower that you pick
Each butterfly you chase
I feel my heart changing
To every shade of pink
Each kiss you blow my way
Each bubble that you pop
I see my whole world change
To every shade of pink
Each time you grab my hand
You lead me to your heart
And there I let my life
Turn every shade of pink
The tutu on your head
Smudged lipstick on your lips
Make me want to kiss you
'Til you're every shade of pink
~Mama~

Why do we do this? Christmas edition
Happy Holidays ....
I totally understand why we say happy holidays .... there are so many things being celebrated in the month of December. I can't expect everyone to celebrate the same as me. I can respect that, but I too want the freedom to be able to say Merry Christmas. I have to say though, I'm curious about other cultures. I researched a bit about Hanukkah because I admit that most of what I knew about it came from that one episode of Friends where Ross explains it to Ben. "I understand why superman is here, but why is there a porcupine at the Easter bunnies funeral?" and for you Nan, "But I didn't get to shake my belly like a bowl full of jelly." Anyways, Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of the oil burning in the temple for 8 days instead of 1 when the Temple was attacked.
Now Christmas ... It's pretty simple since the word is right in it .... I love this line from 7th Heaven, "It's, Christmas. I was thinking about ... well, Christ." Seems simple. I think we all know the story of Christ's birth in a manger. I suppose if we're going to celebrate this holiday we should know what it's about. Here is the part that got me thinking ... what about all the traditions we do in celebration of this holiday? Do I even know why we do certain things?
A few years ago I got to thinking about Santa Claus. JJ was at that age and we had to decide, Santa: the way Satan spells his name when he wants to trick us or harmless, jolly guy in a suit? Well, we researched. St. Nicholas dates back to the 4th century. He was a Christian who was known for giving gifts to the poor. In the 16-17th century the gift bringer was changed to Christ Child (called Kris Kringle in English). I know things have been altered over time, but what a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about giving. Part of the spirit of Christmas and being a Christian is looking outside ourselves and giving to others. However, we decided we would never lie to our kids if they ask straight out if Santa goes down the chimney. I believe we are raising smart enough kids that as they get older they will understand the difference between the magic of Christmas and the spirit of Christmas. Most kids figure it out on their own before the age of 8.
What else do we do? A Christmas tree is very important to me. Warm fuzzy feelings from my childhood. In the 15th century the tree was brought out the last night before the holidays for men to dance around with maidens and women. Not exactly what I would call a warm fuzzy tradition. Later that century, nuts and fruit were put on it for the children to collect on Christmas day. Getting a little closer to what we use it for today. By the 18th and 19th Century it had become a Protestant tradition and in 1781 it was brought to Canada by Brunswick soldiers and was used in a more popular way as it is used today. Today, that star on top represents the star of Bethlehem and the Angel represents the host of angels in the nativity. Not sure how I feel about the early origins, but I will still probably put up a tree and focus on the family time spent together and the nativity part.
I also love putting up the Christmas stockings. There is no historical proof of where this origin came from. It's said that St. Nicholas wanted to secretly help some young ladies so he put a bag of gold in their stockings that were hanging to dry. There is no proof of that, but it became a tradition with the children. Of course they put their regular socks out. Some say that Christians adopted it from Odin who would leave candy and gifts for Children who left carrots and sugar in their boots for his flying horse Sleipnir. I don't know. I wasn't there.
I have learned a few things. Everything comes from somewhere and you have to decide why you do something and what your motives are. Personally, my favorite way to celebrate Christmas will always be the carols, the lights and the time spent with family and friends. Wow, I'm sounding old. That's something my Dad would have said. In all truthfulness, I think it's wonderful to celebrate the holidays and enjoy your traditions because none of it would mean anything if your heart wasn't filled with hope. Those things are fun because we have hope and joy. Otherwise, these things are meaningless.
Enjoy preparing for the season.

Creation Station ... homemade gifts
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! No ... seriously. Even Matthew wants to put the tree up soon. Next week is the start of December ... along with this comes the planning, lists and organizing. For JJ and I, that means crafts! For Matthew that means some vacation time coming up. For Tee that means more things she can touch. Oh blessed little lamb.
We started JJ's teacher's gifts awhile ago. We wanted to make something to avoid the obvious duplicates. It was so fun! Of course, fortune cookies are Chinese which is right up JJ's alley these days. So we started our creation station ....
First, we asked all the students, the principal and a few mom's what they liked about each teacher. This was easy since I get one on one time with each child out in the hall every week..
Second, we typed up each response and cut them into strips.
Third, we made paper fortune cookies and put one thought in each one ....
The finished product ...

I guess it's sort of a teacher's advent calendar filled with reasons why they are loved. Every day they can open one and know that they are making such a difference in so many little lives. Teachers are awesome. If you are a teacher, thank you!

Genius
Have you ever had one of those .... "wow, that's genius ... wish I knew that a long time ago" moments? Sometimes I have those moments ... something hits me and I say, "Genius!" Sometimes people will share something with me and I say, "Genius!"
For example, it wasn't until JJ was 5 and I was in the store with my friend that she pointed out that I could simply pull the front of the cart out and JJ could climb in. Seriously! I NEVER thought of that. All the times I struggled to get her in and it could have been that simple! Genius!
Then there is less obvious stuff like adding cottage cheese to your skeds. The kids don't know it's there and for some reason the sauce doesn't stain their clothes/faces as much ... and added nutrients they don't get in their regular diet. Simple. Or using washed out playdoh containers to put snacks in their lunch. Simple. Or typing the girls "stories" right on the computer instead of writing it in their journal and then typing it out later. Seriously a lot easier and I just thought of this a little while ago. I don't think it's that I'm "unsmart" ... it's just that it never dawned on me before. Or as I would say as a child, "donged on me".
Simple little tricks ... stuff I wish I had known for a long time and can't believe I never thought of before.
Know what you can do when your daughter's pants are too short? Sew lace on the bottom of the legs. Super easy, super cute and super economical. Did you know that if you put a pack of wipes in every room you have a pack of wipes in every room! Genius. Or that if you keep "just in case" clothes and accessories in the car you don't have to carry stuff around and you're always prepared.
Here's my favorite. After weeks of my friend telling me about price matching it finally hit me! I can go through the flyers, write on the top what I want at that sale price and do all my shopping at one place! No more running around to hit the door crashers. Simple. Genius.
If you put soap and water in a spray bottle, your child will clean your entire house and be convinced you are a fun mom. Put some cider vinegar in a cup with a few drops of dish soap and your fruit flies will be gone in one day. You can substitute half your oil in a recipe with unsweetened applesauce. Rinsing with peroxide is safe and really helps when your gums hurt or feel "full". And in my case, if you say something is Chinese, JJ will eat it. "Yes my dear ... shepherd's pie is Chinese food". Don't judge, Chinese people eat shepherd's pie too.
And so I invite you to enlighten me. Tricks to save time, money, energy and sanity. No trick too simple. Make me say, "Wow, you're a Genius!"

And the winner is ....
After reading through all the family Christmas traditions, Matthew and I knew right away which one was for our family.
And the winner of the Family Christmas Traditions contest is ....
Drum roll ....
Lisa H.
We love the idea of getting a family game every year and playing it as a family. The game can change as our family grows and develops. Hopefully we won't start any bad traditions with it. I have a friend who is actually not allowed to play scrabble with her family anymore because she gets too worked up. We will start with a game that will get Tee's attention and it will allow us some normal family time. We even have a gift card for toysrus and I look forward to going with Matthew to pick it out. We need something that would get Tee's attention, but also be fun for JJ. Any suggestions??
Lisa, your ornament will be waiting for you.

Christmas Traditions Contest
Looking out my front window I see a huge yellow maple that screams AUTUMN to me. It also reminds me that we are going to have a lot of leaves to rake up soon. I told Matthew we cannot have a repeat of the first year we lived here. We were THOSE neighbours. Thank you Bud and Julie for helping with that. We have awesome neighbours, but that's another story for another time.
Hmmm. Traditions can be interesting. They can be good or bad. Reading the story of Christ's birth around a fire place on Christmas Eve or saying you'll do stuff early this year, but still finding yourself running around doing errands last minute. Or you could be a Dickey and have the tradition of staying up most of the night getting ready. I do not have Dickey blood in me so I cannot keep up with that tradition. Perhaps you make a donation to the food bank or promise that you won't eat too much at Christmas dinner.
Although my front window tells me that it's Autumn, visiting the store this morning told me that it's Christmas. So, in keeping with the Spirit of Christmas that is fast approaching I am inviting you to take part in a Christmas Traditions Contest. I am looking for Christmas ideas and traditions. I'd love to hear about a tradition that you did as a family growing up or one that you have started as an adult. If we decide to do your tradition as a family, you will receive a personalized tree ornament . I am also hoping to hear some really cool/beautiful stories to get to know a little more about you.
You can either write your tradition(s) on my blog or on my facebook. I wanted to get started so I have time to make the ornament and get it to the winner before we are in the thick of the season. So looking forward to hearing from you!

There has to be more out there
I have always believed in God. For a good portion of my childhood I assumed everyone believed in God. As my world expanded I was introduced to many different world views. My core beliefs have not changed, but my faith has been altered as I have learned and experienced more. This past year I have done a lot of thinking and I dare admit that I have asked the question, "what if there isn't a God?". I mean, come on, there are so many different religions, faiths and even denominations within the same faith. So many different views on certain topics .. even within the same church! How could I possibly be the only one who has everything figured out?
Well, here's my big conclusion,
I don't have everything figured out. I do not know the mind of God.
There are so many things that I could debate about or worry about. I could argue until I am blue in the face about a certain view point. That's not really me. I do have certain things that I truly believe, but if I get to Heaven and find out I'm wrong, I'm not going to argue. What I do believe is that there has to be more out there than what we see.
There has to be more than what we see infront of our faces. It's so easy to get caught up in daily living and be ignorant to a greater picture. These few years on earth can't possibly be all there is. What is the point? Why are we here? There have been some people in my life who have lost children over the past year. Babies inside the womb, an eleven year old, a teen. What was their existence for if it was just taken away?
There has to be more. I see the earth or a video on how a child is created. There has to be something greater than us. A reason for the gratitude you feel when you look at the stars. A bigger picture than what we can see from our view point. Some greater story than the immediate pain we feel on earth. Something bigger. Reasons that we can't possibly understand from where we are.
I think we are living here as a flicker of time before eternity. I believe those mothers will be reunited with their children one day. I believe there are forces here on earth that we can't always see. I believe I may have entertained angels and I have felt the force of Satan try to tear my family apart.
I remember after my Papa passed away I was sitting in his car in a parking lot as my mom took care of some of his business. I can't remember all the details. I think I was praying. It was a sad time. I remember suddenly feeling the car move as though a great weight had rested on it. It felt as though a bunch of angels had landed on his car .... I don't know. I remember looking around kind of weirded out. You may think I'm nuts, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.
I don't want what I see before me to be my only purpose in life. However long I live for, I don't want this to be it. Living day by day ... from high to high. I suppose this is what they call hope. Hope for something greater and bigger.
What do I know? I know that God wants me to love him and to love others. I know He wants me to look past the superficial. He wants me to enjoy the wonderful gifts on earth, but to think eternally. To know that He has a greater picture. He was here before the world began. Generations of people have come and gone. That can't be the end. There has to be more out there.
Well, here's my big conclusion,
I don't have everything figured out. I do not know the mind of God.

There has to be more out there.

reflections
Well folks. I am 32. Not sure if I have any great wisdom to impart on you in my old age. I have learned that if you are gassy, working out is really helpful and that one can have grey hair and acne at the same time. Probably not words to live by.
When a birthday comes around there are two things that I have learned
1) Make it a goal that the birthday person feels loved by the end of the day .. whatever works for that person.
2) The birthday person shares and reflects on the highlight of that year.
#1 was a success for me this year. I certainly felt loved. I got some lovely gifts from my mom that certainly reflect my personality. I got two cakes ... not chocolate cakes with frosting with my name on top. I got Lisa cakes. I got a candy cake and a chocolate bar cake. Two important people in my life thought, "what would Lisa like?". I also got this super cool book
I don't feel loved because Matthew went out and bought me a present. I feel loved because Matthew listened to me talk about cities, architecture and maps for hours and thought I would like this book even though it had never crossed my mind before. I also feel loved because of a special little note I got. JJ handed me a picture covered in hearts with 100 written on the top. She said it's because "I love you 100". Now that in itself is so sweet, but it was so sweet to me because it's something I say to Matthew. There is a little person who copies me and was able to put into a picture, words that she has heard before. It was so endearing. I'm a so lucky to have a daughter who shares a piece of my heart. And then there's Tee. I can't help but love her solely on the fact that she sounds like a fax machine half the time. All she has to do is be herself and I feel the love and blessing pour over our house.
Want to talk about feeling loved?
Waking up to all these faces holding pictures with birthday messages. It would put a smile on a constipated polar bear with fleas. I am not constipated. Nor do I have fleas so you can imagine the smile on my face. Thanks to everyone who took part.
Well, that takes care of #1.
#2 Reflections over the past year ....
In my old age I seem to have forgotten this past year. My calendar says the year did happen.
*Tee starting daycare. That opened a world of possibilities for Tee and myself.
*Having a 5 year old. JJ has really grown this year and it's really fun watching her discover things.
*Volunteering in room 19. It feels so good to be part of something again.
*Walking with Matthew and getting caught in the rain. I couldn't run so we walked together ... one of us was screaming. It was the perfect picture of Ohana.
I'll take my rose coloured goggles off for a second.
*Tee's diagnosis was pretty huge. Changed our whole family dynamic and opened a whole world of new fears and challenges.
*I went through a season of personal challenges as I tried to figure out my life and faith
We still struggle as we try to define our family and faith, but the "hope" side is certainly winning now. This is our time and this is our dance. Now if you have seen us dance you may worry about us ... but don't worry. We still have fun doing it.
Thanks for being part of my life.

Mind over matter
I think sometimes you have to step back from things to see the bigger picture. Last weekend was rough for me. My legs didn't want to walk and my workout was pretty bad. Oh course I had my cheerleaders watching me, but it was discouraging and kind of painful.
It's easy to start to panic that things have progressed to the "next level". Looking at those few days alone, it is pretty scary. But then the next day comes.
We went to see our family Dr. on Wednesday. Now you have to understand that we haven't seen her in awhile. My guess would be 4-6 months since any of us have been in there. You know what the first things she says to me is?? She said I looked so much better and that I looked like I was moving around so much easier. I told her I had been working really hard and she said she could really tell.
Having been with myself every day I didn't notice how much I had changed. I left feeling pretty good about myself. I even noticed that when I was in JJ's class I wasn't as afraid of falling. I have hardly even been using my cane! I guess the extra workouts and trying new things has really helped.
Next month is my annual testing at McMaster and I'm kind of excited. I get so discouraged when the numbers drop, but last year I was able to keep the numbers the same. At first I was discouraged that my hard work hadn't done anything, but I've recently discovered why they were so happy about it. It meant for 1 year I stopped the progression of muscular dystrophy. I should be proud of that! I have lost my ability to do any stairs and so many things are limited now, but I can still cook and clean my house and walk. I can still be a good mom and a good friend. I have a team around me to make things happen, but I have to remember those good things on days like last weekend.
Come to think of it, the weather wasn't good and I had really pushed my body the few days before ... not to mention I also had a bug. No wonder my legs wanted to sleep. My whole body wanted to sleep.
Anyways, thank you Dr. B for the encouragement .... now to figure out how to be as mobile when forced to wear shoes.

The Swing of Things
It's been a pretty interesting few weeks. I feel like things have completely changed. JJ is in SK and growing up so quickly. She amazes me with the things she is learning. Sometimes she asks questions that seem so grown up. She even lost her first tooth! I had trouble sleeping that night because I was so excited seeing how excited she was!
Tee is in "school" for the mornings. She is amazing me too. Yesterday she called, "mum!, mum!, mum!" from her crib. She even looks in my eyes to show me things. I still get scared about what the future holds for her, but the amount of growth we've seen in the past 6 months is exciting. She loves her worker. We have been blessed in that area. Whenever I talk to her worker I can see in her actions and words how much she really cares about Tee.
People have asked what I've been doing with my "free time". I'm really not sure. I have felt busier than ever. By the time we get back from taking Tee to school, I clean, work out, prepare food and then she's on her way back! The mornings go so fast! The next thing you know I'm waiting for the bus! I have been able to enjoy doing more things and feel stronger than ever because of it. Next week I start doing the home reading program in JJ's class and I'm excited that I get to be part of it. I really like being connected to both of the girl's classes. They are at a really good facility with great teachers and I'm thankful for the opportunity to be involved.
Things are pretty set up for the rest of this year, but starting in January things are thrown up in the air again. Our worker who takes Tee to school and appointments will be going back to her regular job so we'll have to figure out a new plan. We will also have to decide what to do about Tee's education ... there are several options for her. It leaves me feeling lost again, but I have to remember how long it took to work things out for this term and how wonderfully it's turning out. God worked behind the scenes in a process to get us where we are today and I have to believe that He'll carry us through this next year.

Firefly Photoshoot
A shimmering reflection
One chance to remember
This moment
To blaze it in your memory
A flicker, a reminder of what once was
A recollection
A flame that burns in your mind
Reviving your thoughts
And forever capturing your treasures

I don't know ... maybe
I have this idea floating around in my head. I'm not sure how it would work or if it would ever work, but sometimes it pops in and I wish that I could implement it. The best way I can think of to describe it would be "a Christmas cookie exchange" for everyday life.
There are certain things that I'm good at making or doing. When you do something over and over it becomes easy and part of your routine. For example, I make zucchini muffins, shepherd's pie and chicken casserole on a regular basis. I can do it with my eyes closed. I have a friend who is amazing at making cookies and makes homemade lasagna. Wouldn't it be nice if we shared them with each other? I'm not talking about a recipe exchange. I'm just saying if you made some extra and shared it with each other you would have something different and tasty waiting in your freezer. It doesn't take much more time or money to stretch it a little farther. So, maybe on Thursdays you make some extra of what you're having and trade it with someone else. Not sure how it would work. I just know that certain people are really good at making certain things.
It kind of came to me when I was making a shepherd's pie. I decided to add a little extra to the pot and pan. Only took an extra minute. I used the extra to put in a loaf pan and put it in the back of the freezer. I knew in my head that I had a meal to whip out if I was having a busy day and it didn't seem like any extra work or money.
Same can go for other areas. I am good at some things that my friends aren't good at and my friends are good at things that I could never accomplish. It just seems more economical and easier to me. Someone told me that they felt like every family was an island. We do have to put our own family first and every family is different, but it would be kind of cool to pair up with a couple families that are similar. Share/trade off babysitting, share/trade toys and clothes, make some extra muffins with your batch ... I don't know.
Sometimes it seems hard to keep your own family afloat so some of you may be rolling your eyes at me. However, I do know that I cannot make gingersnap cookies like my friend, but I can make really good peanut butter cookies. It would be nice to experience a bite of each.

What do you think Mommies and Daddies?
With JJ being home for the summer I've been thinking about something. I'd love to hear your input on the topic. How much time should we spend "playing" with our kids? I ask this because so often I feel guilty if I am not playing with the kids and doing what they want.
We usually spend our mornings exercising, cleaning, cooking and going on walks. I sometimes feel bad that I am not on the floor playing what they want, putting them in a program or making a super awesome craft. There certainly is time for that in the day, but I have been thinking about that. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't know.
Growing up, I don't remember my parents spending their days 'playing' with me. They certainly were around a lot. My Dad was often working on the farm and my mom was always busy with something. We often played on the farm or were part of what my parents were doing. Why do I feel such a need to entertain my children? I don't think I should feel bad if JJ spends the morning doing chores with me. How else is she going to learn how to do laundry, clean the house or cook meals? We actually have a pretty good time doing it and we get the opportunity to talk while we do it. She's getting to an age where she asks lots of questions about what I am doing. I totally understand that part of this is being home with the kids. If I was away from the kids all day and I only had a bit of time with them I wouldn't want to spend that time folding laundry. But stuff does have to get done!
Before I hear back from anyone I probably already know the answer. It's probably about balance. Letting your kids experience work and chores, but also having time to play with us, other friends and on their own. I can't run a camp all day and all summer.
This being said, in a little over a weak my life is going to change. JJ will be in school and Tee will be in her program in the morning. I have spent the last 5 years and 2 months as a stay at home mom. My life has literally revolved around taking care of these girls and I have involved very little in my life outside of that circle. I know I still have Tee in the afternoons and there is so much to do around the house in the mornings, but I feel like a season is done. I am rather excited about it and pleased that I have been able to physically do this. The last little while has been hard, but I know that things are coming together. I still have so much to invest into those two little girls, but it's time to open their world outside of mommy.
I can't wait to have the energy to do new and exciting things and meet them after school with homemade treats and be fresh to hear all about their day! Maybe even have a clean house for a couple hours a day???

how i met your father
How I Met Your Father ... episode 1.
Kids, it was the Fall of 1998. Your father and I had just started our first year of college. We didn't know eachother at all. Although I'm sure our paths crossed that warm September day, we were merely strangers finding our way in a sea of boxes and furniture until later, when fate brought us together.
Your Aunt Karen and I were taking part in a co-ed small group meeting. Each person was paired up with a guy. I was paired up with this tall guy who I barely payed attention to. We were forced to sing a song together which was slightly awkard, but kind of fun. At the end of the evening we all went our seperate ways. Although I saw this tall, dark stranger around campus, our paths didn't cross much until the last day of school.
We were all at the zoo for the day and my group of friends spent a better part of the day with this guy and his friends. It seemed that one of the guys had a crush on my friend. All I remember was that this stranger I had sung with was grumpy and not a whole lot of fun to be around. We found out later that he was just bummed that he had to say goodbye to his friends the next day and didn't want to spend the day watching his friend try to pick up a girl who wasn't too interested in him.
That was it kids. That was the year I spent with this guy.
How I Met Your Father ...episode 2
Kids, remember the tall stranger I sang with back in the fall of 1998? Well, 4 years later our paths crossed again. It was the summer of 2002. I was leading a camp with your Aunt Becky and your Aunt Sarah. We worked with the younger camp, but the older camp would often have volunteers come in for trips. This is where I ran into this guy again. We chatted a few times while loading buses, but nothing really ever became of it.
Later that year I was chatting with a good friend. I knew that she had become friends with this guy and I asked about him. I had noticed the summer before that he seemed like he had turned into a good guy. She instantly got ideas in her head. For the next few months she made attempts to set us up. Nothing really happened until one day we started going for walks and talking. We walked and talked for hours. It was during these walks that we learned everything about eachother. Nothing was ever said, until one day he asked me if we officially wanted to do stuff together.
Not too many people knew about our relationship so it was a bit of a surprise, but we do have your Aunt Jennifer to thank for re-introducing us. I didn't want to tell too many people about him and my boss at work quickly referred to him as "he who has no name". It didn't remain a secret much longer. He had won my heart by T.P.ing my car, sending me roses, bringing me chai teas while I was working and coming over just so I wouldn't be bored. By the summer of 2003 we were in love and on Halloween that year, he showed up on my doorstep in a Mountie Uniform and asked me to marry him.
And kids, this is how i met your father.

Uncontrollable fits of laughter CONTEST
Okay guys .... I need to laugh. You know, those times when you are giggling so hard that you can't control yourself. When you think back and you break out in a giggle just thinking about it.
Tee drinking from a straw makes me giggle. Her little face is so stinkin cute! She has great lips.
Or thinking about JJ's face when she saw that the cookies were gone Christmas morning. She couldn't believe it.
There are just some things that no matter what, they make you laugh. I'll never forget the time my family was out for dinner. Matthew was still somewhat new to the family. We had been talking about personality types, but my family had moved onto disabilities. Poor Matthew was still stuck in the last conversation and blurted out, "Lisa says I'm different" It was so funny for the rest of us who were in the current conversation. I still don't think Matthew knows what was so funny, but I'm sure everyone at the restaurant thought we were a pretty special group.
Some of the best giggle fits are when you are in church because you know you have to control it. I'll never forget sitting in a row with my family as a child during a baptism when a little old man came out in his gown. He had forgotten to wear pants underneath and his little legs were sticking out. I'm sure he didn't look that funny, but when one person starts up in church it's VERY contagious. Even my mom was trying not to laugh while scolding us. I don't remember the image of the person .... it just remember the giggles.
I've written before about my friend Ali. Many of my giggle moments include her. I will never forget the evening of hyperboles. Even Matthew laughs when it's mentioned.
Laughter is good for the soul!!! It also burns a lot of calories ;)
It's been a stressful week with Tee. I don't know what's going on, but I need a good laugh. Tell me your funny stories or something that makes you giggle and I'll put your name in a draw. The prize? Something funny. he he.

The prize? Something funny. he he.

Dear Tee
Dear Tee,
You are 3! 3 years old today! What a big girl you are! I know it's kind of silly to write a letter, but Nana did this for Mommy when I was a little girl and I really like them now.
You have had a big year. Mommy and Daddy have pushed you pretty hard sometimes. You have met lots of people and started going to "school". Some days you like to go and some days you don't.
We like watching you line up your toys and walk around singing. You are such a happy girl. You make very funny sounds! Sometimes Mommy and Daddy laugh in the middle of the night because you are putting on your own show in your crib! It is very funny!
You are very good at puzzles and matching things. You are also good at singing and dancing. This year we will work on saying a few words and learning to follow instructions.
Mommy, Daddy and JJ love you so much! Never forget how blessed you are! You are a very healthy little girl and have lots of people who love you. Not everyone has a team of people around them like you do!
We are so proud of who you are turning into. When you say a word, follow an instruction or reach for our hand you put tears in our eyes because we are so happy. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful little 3 year old. Let's go through this next year together and see how far we can get. The stars are there for you to reach for.
Love,
Mommy and Daddy

Like one rotten potato in the bag
A rotten potato is not exactly the nicest image, but we all know what it does to the rest of the bag. I am often guilty of being that rotten potato. Just call me Mrs. Potato Head.
A bad attitude spreads like fire and for some reason it's often me who starts the fire. The reasons aren't really important right now ... Exhaustion, frustration, PMS. The point is that it is highly contagious! For example, I was so frustrated with our broken faucet in the kitchen that I blurted out in anger, "if this isn't fixed by the end of the week I'm hiring someone to fix it!". Well, that certainly put Matthew in a bad mood. Matthew is not a fighter ... he's a builder. So a wall went up between us. Talk about one comment being a rotten potato! I argued my case for awhile .. "well, it's true. I have asked over and over and it has to be fixed." Didn't take me long to realize my motives were not right. Let's face it, I could have hid behind my points, but the truth was I was threatening him. I wasn't really going to call someone. I was just mad and I wanted to blame someone. After the walls came down I learned that Matthew had a plan to get help to fix it next week. Fortunately we removed the rotten potato before it spread to the little Miss Potato Heads.
I was watching a show the other day where one person in the family had a bad attitude. It slowly spread to the entire family. The Mother stepped in and explained how sometimes you have to just choose to be in a good mood. The whole rotten potato thing works the other way too. What happens when you pass sugar around? Everyone gets pretty happy pretty fast. I decided to try this theory out.
JJ had been whiney for awhile and it was getting tiring. I decided I wasn't going to tell her, but show her what I wanted. I quickly and calmly explained how things were going to be. I then got my broom and started sweeping. I quietly started singing a song I know she loves. The next thing I know she's joining me in cleaning the house! She actually was becoming proud of her accomplishments! I couldn't believe it worked. Now of course it took Tee 3.5 seconds to undo our hard work .... which is another story for another time.
We have a lot of power to influence people with our words and actions. I was in the store the other day and a lady asked if she could get by. I barely had time to position my feet before she moves my cart, mutters, "or not" and stomps off. I don't even know this lady, but she put me in a bad mood pretty fast. I actually tried to follow her hoping we'd butt heads so I could confront her. I realized pretty fast that was a stupid idea. No need to throw another rotten potato in the bag. On the flip side, we were driving home one day and I was blankly starring out the window. I didn't even register what I was looking at until suddenly at a stop sign a young girl on the sidewalk smiled at me. So small, but sweet. She probably didn't even realize she was spreading sugar.
I certainly don't want to run around with sunshine coming out my butt. That could be very annoying. We have to be real ... we are human. I do however need to be aware of how my attitude afftects others. I suddenly have the urge to go look in my cupboard to see if I have any rotten potatoes.

Super Cool person of the week
This week's super cool person is .....
Renee
Renee is my sister in law. The first time I met her I could see her sizing me up. I must have passed the test because I was allowed to marry the youngest member of the Dickey kids. I jumped into a full family with lots of kids. It didn't take long to form a special bond with her. We have so much in common. We are a lot alike and we married brothers who are very much alike. Sometimes I have to giggle ...it's not hard to tell our husbands are related. It's nice to have a similar couple who are a few years ahead of us.
Renee is hard working and gives all of herself to her kids, friends and loved ones. I also love her spunk. She will start dancing to any song! She is always looking for the good in situations and has a lot of determination. She is a fountain of knowledge and wisdom.
I think you're awesome Renee.
